Videos: Mary-Kate Olsen’s Scenes from The Wackness

July 19, 2008 by Erin Balser

Mary-Kate Olsen is only in The Wackness for nine minutes. She’s featured in two scenes and in both scenes, her character, Union, is stoned out of her mind. I think MK did a great job in her role, but I think it’s weird that the media and the studio hyped her perfomance in the film so much and she’s in it so little.

The video below is her first scene in the film. It’s early in the movie and Stephanie, Luke’s love interest, just found out that Luke is a dealer. MK is one of his regular clients.

The video below is her second, and final, scene in the film. This scene is much longer and it’s the infamous bar scene wherein she makes out with Ben Kingsley’s character.

What do you think of Mary-Kate’s performance? What sort of role do you think she should take on next?

okay, this is my honest opinion. The first clip, I really like, the second clip, I don’t like. I’ve been waiting for Mary-Kate to act free like she did in the first video. She just let go, that’s why her performance was so convincing, unlike in Weeds/Factory Girl which both felt forced and unnatural acting. In the second video, her acting did feel forced/unnatural and awkward too. She was wheezing a lot when she was talking to Luke in the bar and I couldn’t make out some of the words she was saying. The make-out scene was over-hyped. She wasn’t in it for a long time so I can’t really judge if she’s improved as an actress since her So Little Time days. From what I see, her acting is so-so. I love Mary-Kate though.

I personally think her acting has improved but i would like to see her in something different where she isnt a druggy…
and where shes in it a bit more!
but shes really taken herself away from “Mary-Kate and Ashley” and proved she can, i mean.. you wouldnt think that was one of the olsen twins!?
I think it was pretty good, if you like that sort of thing. I just wish there was more, and not so much druggy MK … I thought she was meant to snog Ben? not be actually …well having a quickie.

I think MK’s performance was great,I really liked what I watched although I wish there was more of her in the film. She’s improved her acting skills,to my mind at least.

hey i agree with every single one of you! i think she looked cool with her blonde wig, but it would be nice if there would be a scene were she was, u know, drug-free! and i must say, i`m absolutly shocked that she is only in it for 9 min!!! thats insane!! they have been talking about it like she was the lead character or something… and i feel she needs to do something totally different now, or else she will be doing drug roles forever! but nothin but love from me mk;o)

  5. lilli says:

ok, i love but mk, BUT her appearance was totally over-hyped. i thought she was in the whole movie. but then again, using mk name is a smart move if you want to promote a movie (having ben kingsley in it would be enough, but having mk makes it reach a whole more audience).

i liked her act, and au contraire, i liked the 2nd scene too.

  6. Luy says:

I’m sure she told us in some interview or another than she was only in it for two scenes, so I was expecting that all along =/ I’m surprised at your surprisement!

But I agree with you all on the druggie thing, she needs to be brave and try something new.

  7. Erin says:

    @Luy

I remember hearing only 2-3 scenes, but I was expecting it to be more than 9 minutes–more like 15-20. 15 would still be a super small part of the film.!

  8. Tabbie says:

what is Ashley doing these days?
