Videos: Mary-Kate Olsen’s Scenes from The Wackness
July 19, 2008 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen is only in The Wackness for nine minutes. She’s featured in two scenes and in both scenes, her character, Union, is stoned out of her mind. I think MK did a great job in her role, but I think it’s weird that the media and the studio hyped her perfomance in the film so much and she’s in it so little.
The video below is her first scene in the film. It’s early in the movie and Stephanie, Luke’s love interest, just found out that Luke is a dealer. MK is one of his regular clients.
The video below is her second, and final, scene in the film. This scene is much longer and it’s the infamous bar scene wherein she makes out with Ben Kingsley’s character.
What do you think of Mary-Kate’s performance? What sort of role do you think she should take on next?

Olivia Thirlby Talks about Mary-Kate Olsen
February 15, 2008 by Erin Balser
Olivia Thirlby, Mary-Kate Olsen’s co-star in The Wackness, has been doing a lot of press recently. She has tons of movies out (including Juno).
In an interview with Pipe Dream, she was asked about MK and Heath Ledger.
Here’s what she had to say:
It’s sad. I don’t know, I haven’t talked to her about it. I don’t think she’s connected at all. I think it’s just that the tabloids f**king love her. All of the Heath stuff was created by the tabloids, which are evil, and you should print this: Everything the tabloids say are lies. It seems to be something that the general public can’t grasp. Literally, all that sh*t is completely made up. As somebody who has honestly never been in [the tabloid gossip], but as somebody whose friends have occasionally been victimized, the sh*t that they write is just so hilarious. It’s just so ridiculous! And it’s really hard to see Heath Ledgers’ death be made into this big who-dun-it, because somebody died and this person was poised for true greatness in this world and it’s so sad that he’s not going to be able to contribute anymore. Let’s just leave it at that.
Olivia is a bright young star and it seems like she’s very aware of the Hollywood scene. I wish her the best!

January 27, 2008 by Erin Balser
“The Wackness” starring Ben Kingsley, Josh Peck, Olivia Thrilby and Mary-Kate Olsen received more than critical acclaim–it won the Audience Award in the dramatic film category at the Sundance Film Festival.

It was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for distribution, meaning it will be in theaters near you! Hopefully sooner than later. Some think finding an audience for the film may prove to be difficult, but only time will tell.
Congratulations to the cast, crew and to writer/director Jonathan Levine!

Even More Reviews for “The Wackness”
January 20, 2008 by Erin Balser
The accolades keep coming and coming!
indieWire
Indie Wire finds “The Wackness” to be youthful and refreshing!
A filmmaker who matters is someone capable of re-invigorating genres with spunk and a playful lack of caution. That’s Jonathan Levine, who wowed the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival audiences with his gory, sly horror film “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane.” His follow up is even better, the high-energy coming-of-age tale “The Wackness,” a fun-loving movie that audiences will find impossible to resist.

Variety
Variety considers Levine’s “second effort reps a considerable leap forward and should have far less trouble getting seen. Marketing toward viewers who came of age in the mid-’90s would help it avoid the classic Sundance hit/arthouse dud scenario; ancillary prospects are bright.”

Coming Soon
Coming Soon thinks this film is even better than Levine’s first!
With his second movie “The Wackness,” director Jonathan Levine looks to be joining the likes of Marcos Siega (”Pretty Persuasion”) and Craig Gillespie (”Lars and the Real Girl”) in the exclusive club of recent directors whose first two movies are released in the same year, with their second effort far surpassing the first. In this case, few people will even believe that Levine’s two movies were even by the same director maybe because unlike the teen slasher “All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”, Levine wrote “The Wackness” himself, presumably based on his own experiences living in New York City during the ‘90s.
