Look for Less: Mary-Kate Olsen at MET Gala
March 16, 2009 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen looked gorgeous last night at the MET Opera 125th Anniversary Gala. She really took old Hollywood glamour and gave it her own modern twist! I love the red, red lips against the pale skin and dark dramatic dress.
Here’s how you can get the look for less.
The ankle length batwing dress is reminiscent of MK’s bold choice. It doesn’t have the same silhouette on the bottom, but it will give you the same overall sophisticated, dramatic feel. It’s currently $34.99 from Newport News.
The quilted silver clutch adds some evening glamour to MK’s look - perfect for the night at the opera. I’m a fan of this woven version by MK and Ashley’s latest fashion collaborator, Steve Madden, currently on sale for $24.99.
You can match MK’s woven belt almost exactly with this pick from Wet Seal. The best part? The sweet $7.50 price tag.
Finally, there’s no way your look would be complete without ruby red lips. I went for Cover Girl’s Incredifull Maximum Red, available in drugstores nationwide.
Add matching nail polish, big, romantic curls, and a single, large ring and you’ll be good to go for your glamorous night night!
Christian Siriano Praises Mary-Kate Olsen
March 14, 2009 by Erin Balser
Christian Siriano, winner of Season 4 of Project Runway, talked celebrity style in OK Magazine’s Red Carpet Confidential blog. He had some harsh words for Mariah Carey, but is loving the current look of Lady Gaga and Mary-Kate Olsen.
“I like it because it’s really edgy, it’s cool, it’s downtown,” he says about MK. “She doesn’t care what she’s wearing. It’s what real people really throw on. Like those edgy, hip girls who are slumming around and going to clubs all night. I like it.”
I think Christian hit Mary-Kate’s fashion philosophy bang-on. I love it too.
I also loved what he had to say about Lady Gaga. The singer wears practically nothing and what she does wear is very out there. But it works for her and Christian agrees.
“I love it,” he says. “Just panties and a blouse. That’s all you need. I don’t think a day-to-day woman could pull it off, but GaGa’s fabulous.”
She is indeed.

Mary-Kate Olsen Badly Dressed Celeb
December 31, 2008 by Erin Balser
The Telegraph released their list of worst dressed celebrities of 2008, and Mary-Kate Olsen came in at #4 for her misplaced Missoni get-up (below). The oversized robe-like dress and Marc Jacobs headband didn’t impress anyone.
Mary-Kate did reveal she had no time to put that look together and pulled that outfit directly from a rack at a photo shoot.
I’m glad the Telegraph puts together their list based on individual looks and not overall style. Deciding best and worst dressed is very subjective, but I think their list of worst outfits this year is pretty spot on.
#10-#5 were Heather Mills, Nancy Dell’Olio, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Sharon Stone and Madonna. Rounding out the top three were Gwyneth Paltrow and Leslie Garrett, with Katie Holmes taking the top spot for her horrid white and black lace jumpsuit.
You can see the slideshow of these stars’ respective outfits here. Do you agree with the list? Disagree? Should Mary-Kate be here?
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Share Clothes
December 13, 2008 by Erin Balser
It’s no surprise Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen share clothes. They both have great sense of style, are the same size and have plenty of garments to go around. However, it’s always fun to see it when it happens.
This week, MK wore a red leopard print Louis Vuitton scarf to a screening of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Last year, Ashley wore the same scarf to a party celebrating Christian Louboutin.
Both the girls took very different takes on the look. Both are casual, but MK went for an all-black ensemble, making the scarf the center of the look. Ashley opted for more color and paired the scarf with the attention-grabbing Christian Louboutin boots. I think both outfits are pretty great. What about you?
Mary-Kate Olsen’s Outfit Explained
April 17, 2008 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen’s interesting combination of loose dress, clutch and headband was a result of having nothing to wear, she told WWD.

She had just come from a photo shoot to go to the New Yorkers for Children celebration of ‘New Year’s in April: A Fool’s Fete’, which left no time for a wardrobe change. So she simple borrowed the headband by Marc Jacobs, the shoes by Yves Saint Laurent and the dress and headed to the event!
When asked about the outfit, MK just shrugged. “I had nothing to wear,” she said.
This is why I love this girl!
Mary-Kate Olsen is the “Queen of Boho Chic”

Style.com broke down the various fashion cliques in New York City yesterday.
These groups included everything from The New Bohemians to the European jet set and those famous from the NYC fashion blogging scene.
The entire thing is a bit silly, but one group “The New Bohemians” has a queen–and it’s Mary-Kate Olsen.
“It was only a matter of time before the queen of boho chic fell in with this pack of well-heeled hiperati,” they write.
It’s true, too, most of the girls in this group– Tara Subkoff, Arden Wohl, Leigh Lezark, Stella Schnabel, Waris Ahluwalia, Chiara Clemente, and Leelee Sobieski–have been seen with MK in and around the NYC club scene.

Michael Kors, judge on the awesome television show Project Runway dishes in this mini-interview about size labels and his fashion icon faves. He mentions Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen pretty late in the video, but it’s worth it!
