First Look: Ashley Olsen on Cover of Hamptons Magazine
June 30, 2009 by Erin Balser
Ashley Olsen is the Summer 2009 cover girl for Hamptons magazine, a magazine dedicated to the Hamptons lifestyle. She talked to the magazine about growing up famous, why she prefers New York to Los Angeles and whether she’ll ever return to acting.
You can read the article online here.
“I’ve definitely had a past life of being a personality, and a very public one… But that’s not what makes me comfortable. I’m not an actress. I’m not a public figure or acting as one,” she said of her more public past.
She also talks about how hard she and Mary-Kate worked to make their fashion line a success.
“It hasn’t been easy by any means. I started with T-shirts,” she says of the origin of the Row. “I wasn’t sure it was going to become a company. It was more something I was doing for myself creatively.”
Ashley believes in her products because they are more than just a brand or a name. She feels the quality of the Row and Elizabeth and James speak for themselves.
“That’s the thing about celebrity brands these days. People think they can define a brand by just a name, but the product has to speak for itself. It doesn’t really matter whose name is on it,” she says. “That’s the truth. It’s the work behind it. It makes you step up to the plate.”
If you want to read the full article, head to the Hamptons magazine website or pick up a copy of the magazine or wait until they post the interview online. The interview with past cover stars are up, so I’m sure it’s a matter of days!

Mary-Kate and Ashley are on Glamour UK’s Best Dressed List
June 25, 2009 by Erin Balser
The May 2009 issue of Glamour UK listed their top 50 best dressed celebrities of 2009. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made the list, with MK coming in at #30 and Ashley just edging out her sister at #26.
You can see the spread of the girls in the magazine at Olsen Pap World. Every person who made the list was accompanied by a quote from a famous person in fashion. Giambattista Valli had the following to say about Mary-Kate:
Mary-Kate has an innate sense of style that follows no rules. Her personal style surpasses fashion.
Glamour asked Sarah Tomczak, their entertainment editor, to comment on Ashley’s style. She said:
She’s not as quirky as her sister, which makes her chic, easy style even more covetable.
So who did Glamour think were the most stylish stars of the year? Cheryl Cole won the coveted top spot this year, beating out last year’s number one, Kate Moss. Victoria Beckham came in at number three. Rounding out the top ten were MTV host Alexa Chung (#4), Gossip Girl star Blake Lively (#5), “I Kissed a Girl” singer Katy Perry (#6), model Agyness Deyn (#7), Katie Holmes (#8), Rihanna (#9), and Rachel Bilson (#10).
Who is your best dressed celeb of the year?

Ashley Olsen is Hamptons‘ Cover Girl
May 20, 2009 by Erin Balser
Fashionista is reporting that Ashley Olsen is going to grace the cover of Hamptons. Hamptons covers exactly that - the luxurious lifestyle of the New York summer getaway community. It is published weekly during the summer and also produces a winter and spring issue.
Ashley will be talking about her and Mary-Kate’s high end line, The Row, which is a great match for the readers of Hamptons.
Previous cover girls include Bridget Moynahan and Kelly Ripa.
I’m really excited to see what the issue looks like and what sort of things Ashley is going to talk about. Is she going to dish about her favorite summer activites? Or keep it strictly business and promote the Row?
Ashley is also making an appearance in the June 2009 issue of Marie Claire.

Ashley Olsen in VMAN Magazine
May 13, 2009 by Erin Balser
Ashley Olsen is in the Summer 2009 issue of VMAN magazine - the issue with Joseph Gordon-Levitt on the cover. The photo shoot is very different; Ashley wears a brunette wig and the overall look is very edgy and sexy. PopSugar has the entire spread online, which you can see here.
The spread is called “The Other Face Of Ashley Olsen” and was shot by photographer Sebastian Faena. In the article, Ashley talks about her two fashion lines, Elizabeth & James and the Row, her transition from acting into fashion and more.
Ashley is officially over acting. This is not surprising, as she’s clearly found an industry she loves and is great in.
“I’ve been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I’m choosing for myself-to be part of the fashion industry,” she said. “That’s what I want for my future. It has nothing to do with my past, nothing to do with anyone else’s agenda. And I followed my heart the whole way.”
Ashley does understand that the line is viewed differently by the public because she came into the fashion world as a celebrity.
“But the outside perception is very different because you do have celebrity brands,” she says. “People like Jessica Simpson and Kimora Lee Simmons, and those are celebrity brands because they have their names on it.”
Ashley also talks more about the structure of her and Mary-Kate’s business. Ashley oversees the day-to-day operations, but Mary-Kate has a lot of say because they are business partners as well as close sisters who see each other several times per day.
The issue should be on newsstands now!

USA Today Talks to Mary-Kate Olsen
April 25, 2009 by Erin Balser
USA Today had the opportunity to talk to Mary-Kate Olsen about being on the Tribeca Film Festival jury, her favorite places to shop in New York, what’s next for Elizabeth & James, and why she now prefers New York to Los Angles.
MK played with high and low fashion with her look for the evening, telling the paper that her outfit was Nina Ricci and TopShop. “I decided to support a little bit of everyone,” she said.
Mary-Kate has been really enjoying living in New York. In March, when she was the Interview cover girl, she said she made the move to NYC “emotionally” about a year ago. She loves it and even calls NYC special and magical.
There’s something magical about New York and the seasons and watching it change,” she said.
The interview itself is very brief, but it’s fun to read. Check it out for yourself here.

Nylon Profiles Elizabeth & James for Steve Madden
April 24, 2009 by Erin Balser
The May 2009 issue of Nylon (the one with The Wackness star Olivia Thirlby and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist star Kat Dennings on the cover) has a small but great profile about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s upcoming collaboration with shoe guru Steve Madden.
The line, Elizabeth and James for Steve Madden, is expected to hit stores in a few short months. And not just any stores, either. It’s the first Steve Madden line to be featured at the likes of Bergdorf Goodmans, Neiman Marcus, Intermix and more.
The brand is a bit of a higher price point than other Steve Madden lines, but it is on par with the Elizabeth and James clothing lines.
Nylon interviews both Mary-Kate and Steve about the collaboration and each only had fantastic things to say about each other, the creative process and the line itself. The previews for the line have been really exciting and I can’t wait until they hit stores.
Be sure to pick up a copy of Nylon and check the interview out for yourself! You can also preview the issue online at Nylonmag.com.
Mary-Kate Olsen & Grey Gardens
April 18, 2009 by Erin Balser
Tonight, the HBO original movie Grey Gardens will premiere. Grey Gardens is the dramatization of the lives of Edith Ewing Bouvier & her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (known as “Big Edie” and “Little Edie”), the aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy Onasis, who were once very active in the 1930s New York social scene. The film costars Drew Barrymore as little Edie and Jessica Lange and Big Edie and so far is getting a lot of buzz.

They lived in an estate in East Hampton (known as Grey Gardens) in increasing poverty and squalor. A 1975 documentary, also known as Grey Gardens, looked at their day-to-day life of idiosyncrasies, singing, dancing, fighting and making up.
Mary-Kate Olsen was the October 2007 cover girl for Harper’s Bazaar. Her fashion editoral inside the magazine, costarring Lauren Hutton, was inspired by the Edies and their life at their deprecit mansion, Grey Gardens.
The Edies are beloved in the fashion community and are often used as inspirations for collections, photo shoots and more. Spreads in both Vogue and Bust have depicted the Beales’ lives and fashion choices. Marc Jacobs even named a Spring 2007 bag “Little Edie” in honor of the younger Edie.
I’m excited to watch Grey Gardens tonight, as it will introduce these two bizarre but fascinating women to a much bigger audience. HBO will also be airing the original 1975 documentary that inspired the fascination surrounding these women, which is also worth watching.
The look book, starring Mary-Kate Olsen as Little Edie and Lauren Hutton as Big Edie, is still available online to view, which you can do so here.
Mary-Kate Olsen on Cover of Interview
February 11, 2009 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen is the cover girl for the March 2009 issue of Interview magazine and boy is it ever stunning. The photography is by Craig McDean is MK is reminiscent of a futuristic ice queen.
They have a behind-the-scenes video for us to watch too. It’s just a musical montage of the cover photo shoot MK did, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch.
The interview is pretty great as well. MK chats about Barack Obama’s inauguration, how her fashion sense developed and her her fashion inspiration comes from, the natural evolution her and Ashley’s relationship has undergone and how that’s influenced their fashion sense, Full House, her and Ashley’s dozens of movies and more.
The content isn’t really new and a lot of the quotes read exactly as they did in interviews past, but it comes across as insightful and fresh. MK is a very intelligent woman who knows a lot about herself and about fashion and it shows in this interview.
“Some people are natural beauties, some have great style, but sometimes it comes from talent,” Mary-Kate says when asked about where beauty and attractiveness stems from. “With some people, it can even be their voice that makes them attractive.”
Read the interview for yourself here.
The magazine will be on newsstands March 24 and the full interview will be in that. This is definitely one issue I’m going to pick up!
Review of Mary-Kate Olsen in FASHION
February 5, 2009 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen graces the March 2009 cover of Canadian magazine FASHION. My copy arrived today, so, of course, I immediately sat down to read it!
The interview with MK is very short. They chat about how busy she is, and about her clothing lines with Ashley and how the two of them work together to oversee their design teams.
They also chat about her acting career. She has a few projects lined up for 2009, but wouldn’t talk about them because it’s still too early. I’m excited to find out what she has in store for us this year. She was great in The Wackness and during her one-episode guest spot on Samantha Who?. I wonder if she has more movies in the works or television guest spots or both!
The editorial spread, which is four full page photos, is black and white and very ethereal. MK looks gorgeous and serene. The clothes are simple and elegant and the spread really shows us a softer, more grown-up side to Mary-Kate.
My only complaint? That both the article and editorial spread was longer. We barely touch the surface of MK and her many, many projects in these short six pages.

Mary-Kate Olsen on March 2009 Cover of FASHION
February 2, 2009 by Erin Balser
I think I might die of excitement. Mary-Kate Olsen is on the March 2009 cover of Canadian fashion magazine FASHION. Being Canadian, this is huge. It’s especially nice because FASHION, while a decent magazine, rarely scores A-list celebrities for their covers. I don’t think much else could say “fashion cred” than by putting MK on their cover.
It’s a gorgeous, simple cover and MK is smiling like she has a secret (see it here). The headline reads “I can’t stand looking like everyone else,” which I guess means the article inside is about her unique fashion sense. It also talks about what she and Ashley are up to now-hard at work on their brands The Row and Elizabeth and James.
According to Lainey Gossip, the shoot recently took place in New York City. MK is wearing a Stella McCartney dress and Alexander Wang cardigan on the cover.
The issue will be on newsstands next week. I have a subscription (eee!) so I promise I’ll let you all know what the article and editorial spread is like.
