First Look: Ashley Olsen on Cover of Hamptons Magazine

June 30, 2009 by Erin Balser

Ashley OlsenAshley Olsen is the Summer 2009 cover girl for Hamptons magazine, a magazine dedicated to the Hamptons lifestyle. She talked to the magazine about growing up famous, why she prefers New York to Los Angeles and whether she’ll ever return to acting.

You can read the article online here.

“I’ve definitely had a past life of being a personality, and a very public one… But that’s not what makes me comfortable. I’m not an actress. I’m not a public figure or acting as one,” she said of her more public past.

She also talks about how hard she and Mary-Kate worked to make their fashion line a success.

“It hasn’t been easy by any means. I started with T-shirts,” she says of the origin of the Row. “I wasn’t sure it was going to become a company. It was more something I was doing for myself creatively.”

Ashley believes in her products because they are more than just a brand or a name. She feels the quality of the Row and Elizabeth and James speak for themselves.

“That’s the thing about celebrity brands these days. People think they can define a brand by just a name, but the product has to speak for itself. It doesn’t really matter whose name is on it,” she says. “That’s the truth. It’s the work behind it. It makes you step up to the plate.”

If you want to read the full article, head to the Hamptons magazine website or pick up a copy of the magazine or wait until they post the interview online. The interview with past cover stars are up, so I’m sure it’s a matter of days!

Ashley Olsen in VMAN Magazine

May 13, 2009 by Erin Balser

Ashley Olsen is in the Summer 2009 issue of VMAN magazine - the issue with Joseph Gordon-Levitt on the cover. The photo shoot is very different; Ashley wears a brunette wig and the overall look is very edgy and sexy. PopSugar has the entire spread online, which you can see here.

The spread is called “The Other Face Of Ashley Olsen” and was shot by photographer Sebastian Faena. In the article, Ashley talks about her two fashion lines, Elizabeth & James and the Row, her transition from acting into fashion and more.

Ashley is officially over acting. This is not surprising, as she’s clearly found an industry she loves and is great in.

“I’ve been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I’m choosing for myself-to be part of the fashion industry,” she said. “That’s what I want for my future. It has nothing to do with my past, nothing to do with anyone else’s agenda. And I followed my heart the whole way.”

Ashley does understand that the line is viewed differently by the public because she came into the fashion world as a celebrity.

“But the outside perception is very different because you do have celebrity brands,” she says. “People like Jessica Simpson and Kimora Lee Simmons, and those are celebrity brands because they have their names on it.”

Ashley also talks more about the structure of her and Mary-Kate’s business. Ashley oversees the day-to-day operations, but Mary-Kate has a lot of say because they are business partners as well as close sisters who see each other several times per day.

The issue should be on newsstands now!

USA Today Talks to Mary-Kate Olsen

April 25, 2009 by Erin Balser

USA Today had the opportunity to talk to Mary-Kate Olsen about being on the Tribeca Film Festival jury, her favorite places to shop in New York, what’s next for Elizabeth & James, and why she now prefers New York to Los Angles.

MK played with high and low fashion with her look for the evening, telling the paper that her outfit was Nina Ricci and TopShop. “I decided to support a little bit of everyone,” she said.

Mary-Kate has been really enjoying living in New York. In March, when she was the Interview cover girl, she said she made the move to NYC “emotionally” about a year ago. She loves it and even calls NYC special and magical.

There’s something magical about New York and the seasons and watching it change,” she said.

The interview itself is very brief, but it’s fun to read. Check it out for yourself here.

Mary-Kate Olsen on Cover of Interview

February 11, 2009 by Erin Balser

Mary-Kate Olsen is the cover girl for the March 2009 issue of Interview magazine and boy is it ever stunning. The photography is by Craig McDean is MK is reminiscent of a futuristic ice queen.

They have a behind-the-scenes video for us to watch too. It’s just a musical montage of the cover photo shoot MK did, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch.

The interview is pretty great as well. MK chats about Barack Obama’s inauguration, how her fashion sense developed and her her fashion inspiration comes from, the natural evolution her and Ashley’s relationship has undergone and how that’s influenced their fashion sense, Full House, her and Ashley’s dozens of movies and more.

The content isn’t really new and a lot of the quotes read exactly as they did in interviews past, but it comes across as insightful and fresh. MK is a very intelligent woman who knows a lot about herself and about fashion and it shows in this interview.

“Some people are natural beauties, some have great style, but sometimes it comes from talent,” Mary-Kate says when asked about where beauty and attractiveness stems from. “With some people, it can even be their voice that makes them attractive.”

The magazine will be on newsstands March 24 and the full interview will be in that. This is definitely one issue I’m going to pick up!

Boston Globe Interviews Ashley Olsen

January 2, 2009 by Erin Balser

The Boston Globe ran a short interview with Ashley Olsen yesterday. They chatted about her first fashion week (she was seventeen), a Full House reunion (don’t bet on it!), her fashion lines and new book, Influence.

Ashley Olsen at Mango SoHo flagship store party in NYC

I love this quote about how being an “Olsen twin” has affected her career, both positively and negatively. She seems to have such a mature and refreshing perspective on fame and how celebrity functions.

It opened a lot of doors in the beginning, because people are curious, so that helped. But automatically people will write what they want to write. It was hard at first. When we started the Row I said, ‘I don’t want anyone to know I’m behind it,’ but you can’t lie to the people you’re selling to.

The interview itself isn’t very long, but it’s interesting. Read it for yourself here.

Video: Mary-Kate Olsen on Conan O’Brien

November 1, 2008 by Erin Balser

Mary-Kate Olsen shared the late night circuit with Ashley, making an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien last night. MK looked gorgeous, but I wished she sat up straight. Conan and MK made fun of her “boho chic” look, chatted about her fashion choices and the recent Influence book launch. MK also plays stylist to Conan and it’s really funny.

I find MK is a lot better at the late night bit than Ashley. She seemed a lot more comfortable on Conan than Ashley did on Letterman.

This is the second time MK has been on Conan. She visited once last September to promote Weeds.

Video: Ashley Olsen on David Letterman

October 31, 2008 by Erin Balser

Ashley Olsen was a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman last night. Ashley looked gorgeous as the pair chatted about staring DualStar at six years old and growing up working, the entertainment industry in general, her and Mary-Kate’s relationship and more. David drills Ashley on her IQ, ideas process and intelligence level. It’s pretty funny.

I love how Ashley says the same thing about how her and MK communicate that MK said on Oprah.

Ashley a lot more alive in this interview than her and MK’s Oprah appearance.

Ashley Olsen on Good Morning America

October 28, 2008 by Erin Balser

Ashley Olsen stopped by Good Morning America to chat about her and Mary-Kate’s new book, Influence. In the interview with Diane Sawyer, Ashley admits she hates being around large groups of people, and even considers herself socially challenged.

Ashley makes Diane look like a giant!

She and MK still have to hit the late night circuit. You can see their full television schedule here.

New York Times Profiles Mary-Kate and Ashley

October 25, 2008 by Erin Balser

The New York Times wrote a really well done profile about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on their website. You have to register to read it, but it only takes a minute and it’s free to do!

Chanel - PFW Fall Winter 2008/09 - Front Row & Arrival

The profile covers America’s fascination with the Olsens and celebrities like them–wafer-thin, glamorous fashion icons. But the Olsens are unique in that, in the respect they don’t run in the same circles as young Hollywood, they don’t go to the same events and they don’t seek out publicity in th same frequency or manner.

“Symbolically, they are harder to define because they defy the standard categories of American celebrity,” The NY Times writes. “They have acted, but acting is now just a peripheral part of their identity. They appear regularly in tabloids, yet they cannot fairly be included among the Parises and Nicoles, the Laurens and Heidis — the sisterhood of young women famous only for their professional apathy.”

The article covers MK and Ashley’s current work at DualStar and their hopes for building and growing their brand. It’s a really good article, I enjoyed reading it a lot.

Videos: Mary-Kate and Ashley on Oprah

October 25, 2008 by Erin Balser

Here are the videos from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s appearance on Oprah on Thursday. The show’s themes were young millionaires who turned their passions into fortunes. Oprah covers their movement into the fashion world, what their day to day life is like, how DualStar has changed since they took it over at eighteen, what they eat for breakfast and more.

They talk about the book a lot, which is new and exciting!

What did you think? They covered a lot of the same ground they do in other interviews, but some of it was new and exciting. It was a bit annoying how Oprah kept cutting them off and answering for them, but that’s just Oprah!
