First Look: Ashley Olsen on Cover of Hamptons Magazine
June 30, 2009 by Erin Balser
Ashley Olsen is the Summer 2009 cover girl for Hamptons magazine, a magazine dedicated to the Hamptons lifestyle. She talked to the magazine about growing up famous, why she prefers New York to Los Angeles and whether she’ll ever return to acting.
You can read the article online here.
“I’ve definitely had a past life of being a personality, and a very public one… But that’s not what makes me comfortable. I’m not an actress. I’m not a public figure or acting as one,” she said of her more public past.
She also talks about how hard she and Mary-Kate worked to make their fashion line a success.
“It hasn’t been easy by any means. I started with T-shirts,” she says of the origin of the Row. “I wasn’t sure it was going to become a company. It was more something I was doing for myself creatively.”
Ashley believes in her products because they are more than just a brand or a name. She feels the quality of the Row and Elizabeth and James speak for themselves.
“That’s the thing about celebrity brands these days. People think they can define a brand by just a name, but the product has to speak for itself. It doesn’t really matter whose name is on it,” she says. “That’s the truth. It’s the work behind it. It makes you step up to the plate.”
If you want to read the full article, head to the Hamptons magazine website or pick up a copy of the magazine or wait until they post the interview online. The interview with past cover stars are up, so I’m sure it’s a matter of days!

Mary-Kate and Ashley are on Glamour UK’s Best Dressed List
June 25, 2009 by Erin Balser
The May 2009 issue of Glamour UK listed their top 50 best dressed celebrities of 2009. Both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made the list, with MK coming in at #30 and Ashley just edging out her sister at #26.
You can see the spread of the girls in the magazine at Olsen Pap World. Every person who made the list was accompanied by a quote from a famous person in fashion. Giambattista Valli had the following to say about Mary-Kate:
Mary-Kate has an innate sense of style that follows no rules. Her personal style surpasses fashion.
Glamour asked Sarah Tomczak, their entertainment editor, to comment on Ashley’s style. She said:
She’s not as quirky as her sister, which makes her chic, easy style even more covetable.
So who did Glamour think were the most stylish stars of the year? Cheryl Cole won the coveted top spot this year, beating out last year’s number one, Kate Moss. Victoria Beckham came in at number three. Rounding out the top ten were MTV host Alexa Chung (#4), Gossip Girl star Blake Lively (#5), “I Kissed a Girl” singer Katy Perry (#6), model Agyness Deyn (#7), Katie Holmes (#8), Rihanna (#9), and Rachel Bilson (#10).
Who is your best dressed celeb of the year?

Nylon Profiles Elizabeth & James for Steve Madden
April 24, 2009 by Erin Balser
The May 2009 issue of Nylon (the one with The Wackness star Olivia Thirlby and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist star Kat Dennings on the cover) has a small but great profile about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s upcoming collaboration with shoe guru Steve Madden.
The line, Elizabeth and James for Steve Madden, is expected to hit stores in a few short months. And not just any stores, either. It’s the first Steve Madden line to be featured at the likes of Bergdorf Goodmans, Neiman Marcus, Intermix and more.
The brand is a bit of a higher price point than other Steve Madden lines, but it is on par with the Elizabeth and James clothing lines.
Nylon interviews both Mary-Kate and Steve about the collaboration and each only had fantastic things to say about each other, the creative process and the line itself. The previews for the line have been really exciting and I can’t wait until they hit stores.
Be sure to pick up a copy of Nylon and check the interview out for yourself! You can also preview the issue online at Nylonmag.com.
Mary-Kate Olsen Badly Dressed Celeb
December 31, 2008 by Erin Balser
The Telegraph released their list of worst dressed celebrities of 2008, and Mary-Kate Olsen came in at #4 for her misplaced Missoni get-up (below). The oversized robe-like dress and Marc Jacobs headband didn’t impress anyone.
Mary-Kate did reveal she had no time to put that look together and pulled that outfit directly from a rack at a photo shoot.
I’m glad the Telegraph puts together their list based on individual looks and not overall style. Deciding best and worst dressed is very subjective, but I think their list of worst outfits this year is pretty spot on.
#10-#5 were Heather Mills, Nancy Dell’Olio, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Sharon Stone and Madonna. Rounding out the top three were Gwyneth Paltrow and Leslie Garrett, with Katie Holmes taking the top spot for her horrid white and black lace jumpsuit.
You can see the slideshow of these stars’ respective outfits here. Do you agree with the list? Disagree? Should Mary-Kate be here?
New York Times Profiles Mary-Kate and Ashley
October 25, 2008 by Erin Balser
The New York Times wrote a really well done profile about Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen on their website. You have to register to read it, but it only takes a minute and it’s free to do!
The profile covers America’s fascination with the Olsens and celebrities like them–wafer-thin, glamorous fashion icons. But the Olsens are unique in that, in the respect they don’t run in the same circles as young Hollywood, they don’t go to the same events and they don’t seek out publicity in th same frequency or manner.
“Symbolically, they are harder to define because they defy the standard categories of American celebrity,” The NY Times writes. “They have acted, but acting is now just a peripheral part of their identity. They appear regularly in tabloids, yet they cannot fairly be included among the Parises and Nicoles, the Laurens and Heidis — the sisterhood of young women famous only for their professional apathy.”
The article covers MK and Ashley’s current work at DualStar and their hopes for building and growing their brand. It’s a really good article, I enjoyed reading it a lot.
Mary-Kate Olsen on Cover of National Enquirer
August 13, 2008 by Erin Balser
Apparently, Mary-Kate Olsen’s personal drama is even bigger than John Edwards’ recent revelation of his affair. The National Enquirer has her face on the cover, claiming that they convinced her bodyguard to tell all.
Inside, he chats about her boozing, the secret behind Heath Ledger’s death, and why her and Ashley are no longer close.
If it’s anything like other tabloid articles about MK and Ashley, it’ll be the same old, she parties too hard and that’s why she and Ashley are growing apart. MK and Ashley have been smart about their bodyguards in the past, and I doubt this is any different.
Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen #3 Highest Paid Tweens
August 5, 2008 by Erin Balser
Yesterday Forbes released a list of the highest paid “tweens” in Hollywood–but no one on the list is actually a tween!
Most are teenagers. However, Forbes clarifies this by stating this list consists of celebs who make their money largely off the tween demographic.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen came in at #3.
Beating them was singing superstar Miley Cyrus and Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who both came in at #1, raking in $25 million each last year. Forbes estimates MK and Ashley’s earnings were $15 million, with most of that coming from DualStar and their product lines associated with that.
Rounding out the top ten were the Jonas Brothers, Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Emma Watson, Hilary Duff, Rupert Grint, and Vanessa Hudgens.
It was certainly a good year for all things High School Musical and Harry Potter!
Rumor: Mary-Kate Olsen Needs Rehab
July 9, 2008 by Erin Balser
Image details: Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Dinner - Arrivals served by picapp.com
Mary-Kate Olsen is on the cover of this week’s Star Magazine. The tabloid is claiming that Mary-Kate has been partying really hard since the death of Heath Ledger and her friends are worried that she needs to enter rehab.
They cite her small fall in LA a few weeks ago as evidence of her hard partying. There’s a picture of it on the cover. After that, MK apparently spent a few days in a holistic facility and told Elle that she “talks to people”, but that isn’t enough. Pals want her in a real, credited treatment center.
“Mary-Kate seriously needs to get to rehab, but she doesn’t think she has a problem,” says their source. “She thinks she’s young, hip and entitled to live her life as she sees fit. But it’s affecting everything.”
Star isn’t the first magazine to report this story, and it won’t be the last. Both In Touch Weekly and The National Enquirer ran similar stories a few weeks ago–right after MK’s fall. However, this is the most in-depth look at MK in a tabloid since right after Heath’s death. However, until there’s out and out paparazzi proof (like the kind that seems to come Lindsay Lohan’s way) or a mug shot, I’m taking these reports with a grain of salt.
Mary-Kate Olsen Promotes The Wackness
June 13, 2008 by Erin Balser
The Independent published an interview with Mary-Kate Olsen today, it’s part of the promotional campaign for The Wackness.
It does explain how MK became involved with The Wackness. The Wall Street Journal reported thatshe had originally auditioned for the role of Stephanie, but here she merely mentions she auditioned:
“I read the script and really enjoyed it. I auditioned and I got the part,” she told the paper. “I go through the same process pretty much every time, and then I met with Jonathan. He is such a great guy and a very talented director. I had seen All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, I thought it was done really well and I was excited about working with him.”
The article also talks about her and Ashley’s changing relationship and their current, diverging career paths.
The most interesting part of the article, however, is her response to a question about her battle with anorexia:
“I’ve never spoken about that. It’s never been accepted or denied,” she said.
What do you think that means?
You can read the article for yourself here.
Thanks to jj for the tip!
Mary-Kate Olsen on Cover of Elle
June 4, 2008 by Erin Balser
Mary-Kate Olsen will be on the cover of the July issue of Elle. They have the cover story online, which you can read here.
There’s some great quotes from Olsen friends in the article too, ike this one from Diane Von Furstenberg:
“Mary-Kate is fragile yet strong. She’s an old soul in a very young girl. Hers is a story that has just begun.”
The also talk to Karl Lagerfield about why he’s such a fan of MK and Ashley, and Lauren Hutton, who is a muse for the girls.
There is also a behind-the-scenes video and photo slide show. The photos are absolutely gorgeous! They feature the Marc Jacobs headband she wore a little while ago, which explains what photo shoot she was at at the time.
Here is the behind-the scenes video. It bothers me that MK isn’t in it very much, but I love how they talk to all the stylists on set to find out how and why they created the scene they did!
I’ll have to get the magazine to see the real spread! The website says the magazine is on newsstands now, so be sure to check it out.
